The Province of Saskatchewan, founded in 1905, is part of the Prairie region without natural borders: it’s bordered by the US to the south, the Northwest Territories to the north, and Manitoba and Alberta to the east and west respectively. The name, which was first used officially for a district of the Northwest Territories in 1882, is derived from an anglicized version of a Cree word, kisiskâciwanisîpiy, meaning “swiftly flowing river.”
With its striking landscapes, rich history, diverse culture, and myriad attractions, it's a province that truly embodies the spirit of Canada and captivates the hearts of all who visit. It’s home to a rich cultural heritage, influenced by Indigenous cultures, European settlers, and more recent newcomers. Indigenous traditions, including powwows and storytelling, are an integral part of the province's cultural fabric.
Fun fact: Hoodies are called Bunny Hugs by the province known as the “Land of the Living Skies”.
A wide range of cultural festivals celebrating music, arts, agriculture, and multiculturalism are hosted by this trapezoid shaped province. Sports, especially hockey and Canadian football, are central to the cultural identity of Saskatchewan residents. The Saskatchewan Roughriders, a Canadian Football League (CFL) team, enjoy a dedicated fan base.
Also known as Canada’s breadbasket, Saskatchewan is a world leader in grain production particularly in wheat, canola and pulses.
Mining and energy production also play a significant role in the economy. Saskatchewan is a leading producer of potash and uranium and is also the fifth largest oil producer in North America. Manufacturing, technology, and services sectors are also growing and contributing to the province's economic development.
Saskatchewan manufacturers are producing a wide range of goods that are exported to markets across Canada and around the world.
Immigration to Saskatchewan:
Saskatchewan operates its own immigration program called the Saskatchewan Immigrant Nominee Program (SINP). It’s designed to attract and nominate skilled workers, business people, and their families who wish to settle in the province. Over 130,000 newcomers settled in Saskatchewan between 2011 and 2022 creating new businesses and adding to the cultural diversity across the province.
